The list above tells you every set released in Pokémon TCG history – but there's more to the story of Pokémon cards than that! Read on for answers to some of the most common questions about sets, to help you get a handle on the hobby.

What's the latest Pokémon set?

The latest Pokémon set is Journey Together, which released on Friday, March 28, 2025. It's focused on the return of trainers' partner Pokémon (after 22 years absent from the game), with Special Illustration cards for N's Reshiram, Lillie's Clefairy ex, and N's Zoroark ex among the most desirable cards (alongside an adorably long Wailord).

What's the next Pokémon set?

The next Pokémon set is Destined Rivals, which will release on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Another highly anticipated, nostalgia-rich set, it stars the return of the devious Team Rocket and its Machiavellian leader, Giovanni. We've already seen a few spoilers, including Team Rocket's Mewtwo – but there are many more Rocket Pokémon on the way!

How many Pokémon sets are there?

As of April 2025, there have been 120 English language Pokémon sets that were legal to use in organized play at the time they were printed.

The pace of new Pokémon sets seems to be picking up in early 2025, with a huge bubble of fan hype and interest for new releases that fired up for January 2025's Prismatic Evolutions and shows no sign of abating.

How many Pokémon sets are released every year?

Around 3-4 Regular Pokémon sets are released each year – usually accompanied by 2-4 Special sets and smaller promotional sets.

For example, in 2024 there were eight new sets in total, including:

Four Regular sets – Temporal Forces, Twilight Masquerade, Stellar Crown, and Surging Sparks.
Two special sets – Paldean Fates and Shrouded Fable.
Two promotional mini-sets – Play! Pokémon Prize Pack Series Four and Trick or Trade 2024.

What are the different types of Pokémon sets?

There are three main types of Pokémon TCG sets:

Regular sets: The TCG's mainline releases, Regular sets are the 'tentpole' events of each season, releasing at roughly regular intervals each year with a large number of cards. Regular sets are normally available in quite a few different product types, including booster boxes of 36 ten-card booster packs.
Special sets: Also sometimes called 'Special Collections', these sets generally have a smaller overall card list and a specific theme that underpins their most prominent new cards. Special sets don't get booster boxes and are normally sold in Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) and small promotional packs like Binder Collections.
Mini-sets: A catch-all term for all smaller set releases that don't merit the 'Special set' label, but are still a distinct collection of new or reprinted cards. These usually come in their own seasonal or promotional packs, like the three-card Trick or Trade mini packs released around Halloween, or promo tins.

Which Pokémon sets are worth money?

Generally, the older and more scarce a Pokémon set is, the more valuable it is. First-edition copies of Base Set, the original Pokémon set, are worth the most money. Individual booster packs can sell for thousands of dollars, and booster boxes are even more ludicrously priced. Many of the individual cards from this set can be just as valuable (if not moreso), provided they're still in good condition.

While this is the ultimate chase set for hardcore collectors, most sets from the early 2000s are hard to find in the form of a sealed booster box.

On the other hand, modern Pokémon cards while never reaching the heights of the older sets, can still be worth a pretty penny. Right now the Pokémon card market is booming, with many cards from the newest Pokémon sets selling for hundreds of dollars.

What's the best Pokémon set?

The best Pokémon TCG set is the one that has your favorite cards in it – which could be any of them! Sorry we can't be more precise, but there's really no 'best Pokémon set' that applies to everyone.

If you're chasing the most expensive rare Pokémon cards, you might consider the oldest sets (as described above) the best, as they give you a chance at pulling something worth new car money.

If you're in love with a particular chase card that's desirable right now, then that card's set might be the best for you – Bubble Mew lovers will likely rank Paldean Fates highly, while Moonbreon stans probably rate Evolving Skies.
