The Denver-based airline, under an agreement with Piedmont Airlines, began offering flights out of Winston-Salem in January. Sunbird currently is in the final stages of merger talks with Atlanta Express Airlines, Sunbird officials say. The merger would give Sunbird 20 landing slots at the Atlanta airport. "We're having a better year so far, and the Winston-Salem expansion has a lot to do with it," said Jan Bennett, marketing director for Sunbird. "We think the merger with Atlanta Express will also give us a boost.
"We really want those Atlanta slots," Ms. Bennett said. "The expanded Atlanta base would give us a lot of flexibility and allow us to build our flights back up."
