By default, You can only use WhatsApp on one phone number at a time. . So much so that, even with two chips in your device, you need to choose one of the two phone numbers to set up your account on the messaging app. This means that, through normal means, there is no way to put the same WhatsApp account on two phone numbers.
However, a function implemented in 2021 on the communication platform, called “Multiple Devices” in practice, allows your account to be used on another device.
With this, Meta’s main messaging app has joined, albeit unofficially, other messengers that allow account sharing on other cell phones, such as Telegram, Signal, Viber and Facebook Messenger itself .
See the complete step-by-step guide below.
How to use your WhatsApp on two iPhones?
To connect your WhatsApp account to another device, the first thing you need to do is open the browser you use (except Safari) on your secondary phone. Then, do the following:
- In the open browser, such as Google Chrome for example, access the web version website for WhatsApp;
- With the website open, tap on the three dots at the top (menu), in the right corner.
- Select the “For desktop” option. This ensures that the website will now look exactly like the desktop version. This step is essential for this method to work correctly.
- On the next screen, the QR Code will appear.
- Now take the cell phone that already has WhatsApp installed, open the app and go to “Settings”.
- Tap on the “Connected Devices” option.
- Then click on “Multiple Devices”.
- Now click on “Connect a Device”.
- Take this cell phone with the app already installed, and point it at the QR Code that is open on the secondary cell phone’s screen.
- From there, WhatsApp will work on both devices .
However, there are some limitations. Firstly, to view messages on the second phone, you will have to open the browser first. The web version also does not send notifications, but you can use most of the features, such as posting videos and photos in the “Status”, for example.
How to use WhatsApp on two Android phones?
The procedure for Android is exactly the same as that used for the iPhone, with only one difference : when reading the QR Code, instead of clicking on “Settings”, you should go to the three dots in the upper right corner of the app screen and click on the “Connected Devices” option. The QR Code reader will then open to authorize the use of the web version on the other device.
Precautions you should take when using WhatsApp on two cell phones
Although using WhatsApp on two devices is a practical option, such as being able to access your account from both your personal and work smartphones, for example, some small measures must be taken to ensure the security of WhatsApp. After all, the application protocols do not recommend this procedure .
So, check out some tips to avoid future problems:
1. Log out after using WhatsApp
When using WhatsApp on another phone, such as your work phone or someone else’s phone, You must always log out of the account in the web version otherwise, other people may access your conversations and data, or even use your information inappropriately.
2. Check the security of the second device
Before installing WhatsApp on a second device, check if it is safe to ensure that there is no data theft or cloning of your number. The second device must have the same security programs as your main cell phone, such as antivirus and antimalware installed, as well as other tools that you deem necessary.
3. Avoid public Wi-Fi networks
But device security alone is not enough: network security when using WhatsApp is also essential. Therefore, the recommendation is to always use private Wi-Fi networks preferably with some security features enabled, such as firewall and encrypted access passwords.
Generally slower and less reliable than private networks, public networks can expose your data to interceptions by hackers, monitoring by third parties, malware, password theft and “man-in-the-middle” attacks, when communications between you and the websites you access are intercepted.
