Can I make a confession? Taco Bell is my absolute FAVOURITE fast food restaurant. I can't get enough of their fries supreme (sadly, they're only available in Canada) but I've also tried the Nacho Fries and they're insane. I had to make my own version!

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Extra-lean ground beef – ground turkey or shredded chicken would also work.
  • Taco seasoningmake your own or use a store-bought blend.
  • Frozen fries – I like using spicy fries, but plain fries will work too.
  • Pico de gallo – use diced tomatoes or jarred salsa instead.
  • Scallions – white or red onion would also be good.
  • Sour cream – use low-fat sour cream or plain Greek yogurt to cut the calories.

Nacho cheese sauce

  • Salted butter – unsalted butter will work, but you'll need to add extra salt.
  • Flour – gluten-free flour or cornstarch would also work.
  • Pickled jalapeno peppers – leave these off if you don’t like spice.
  • Chili powder – make your own using a blend of cumin, paprika and cayenne.
  • Milk – whole milk or half and half will make the thickest sauce.
  • Cheese slices – use 6 oz. Velveeta or 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese instead.

How to make nacho fries

Step 1: Bake the fries.

Cook the frozen fries as per the package instructions.

Step 2: Brown the ground beef.

Fully cook the ground beef with the taco seasoning.

Step 3: Make the nacho cheese sauce.

Bring the cheese sauce ingredients to a boil.

Step 4: Assemble your fries.

Top the fries with the ground beef, cheese sauce and toppings.

Recipe variations

One of the best parts of these loaded fries is that they're fully customizable! Try these different variation options:

  • Fries: Spicy fries, curly fries, waffle fries or sweet potato fries would all be good.
  • Meat: Use ground turkey, shredded chicken or leftover chicken.
  • Toppings: Add some bell peppers, homemade guacamole or salsa.
  • Vegetarian: Use black beans or refried beans for a vegetarian option.
  • Cheese: Melt on some shredded cheddar, Tex Mex or Monterey Jack cheese if you're too pressed for time to make the sauce.

Are they vegan?

If you want to make these fries vegan, swap out the ground beef for beans or veggies, skip the sour cream and use shredded vegan cheese.

What kind of fries should you use?

Ingredients

  • 1 lb extra-lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1 (650g) bag frozen fries spicy flavor
  • 1/2 cup pico de gallo
  • 1/4 cup green onions sliced
  • 1/4 cup sour cream

Nacho cheese sauce

  • 1 tbsp salted butter
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 2 pickled jalapeno peppers, minced (optional)
  • 1 pinch chili powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cheddar cheese grated

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 F. Bake fries on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 10-12 minutes per side or as directed on the package.

  • Heat a large skillet over med-high heat. Saute ground beef with taco seasoning for 8-10 minutes until fully cooked. Set aside.

  • Meanwhile, melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Whisk in flour, pickled jalapenos, chili powder and salt. Whisk in milk, then bring to a boil, watching closely so it doesn't burn. Whisk in cheese and stir until fully melted. Remove from heat.

  • Once fries are done, remove from heat and top with cheese sauce, followed by ground beef, pico de gallo, chives and sour cream. Serve and enjoy!

Make these nacho fries healthier by using ground turkey and low-fat sour cream.

Add on more toppings like guac, quesadilla sauce, bell peppers or refried beans.

Store all the components separately in the fridge for up to 5 days.

    What idiot makes a copycat recipe completely different??? It’s not taco bell fries. Your an idiot if you can’t take taco bell out of your description. You may get hits, but we all think your a joke and will never view your blog again.

    I would say that it gets four starts if nothing else for the article itself.
    It’s thorough, articulate and thoughftul – meaning it provides not only a home made recipe though one that has alternative ingredient options and even attention to detail such as how to reheat, reuse the food.

    It’s absolutely true that some dishes lose their texture and consistency when they sit for a period of time.
    Example? anything with tortillas. Leave them piled under that meat and sauce and soggy they will go. The fries are no different.

    Same with a burger that has sauce. It gets soaked into the bun, and absorbed/lost. By the time you melt it out of there, you’ve microwaved the bread into Chernobyl levels or radiation.

    And what of the vegetables? Who wants hot soggy lettuce?

    Excellent idea to serve them separately.

    P.S. One start off because I am increasingly frustrated at seeing cheese sauces made by more or less melting a pre made product into a pot. If it has Velveeta, Cheese Whiz or anything processed, that’s cheating.
